COVID Vaccine Eligibility Update

COVID vaccines and boosters: change in eligibility
You may have seen in the news that the eligibility for the winter COVID vaccine has now changed.
The free NHS COVID vaccine is now only available for:
-
People aged 75 and over
-
Those aged six months to 74 with a weakened immune system
-
Individuals who live in a care home for older adults
This has changed from last year’s criteria, which included adults aged 65 and over.
People outside these groups can pay for the vaccine privately.
This means that unpaid carers are no longer eligible for a free COVID vaccine AS carers, however carers are still eligible for the flu vaccination.
We’ve confirmed this with the NHS vaccine helpline, as carers are no longer listed in the latest NHS guidance.
NHS confusion
Please be aware that some carers may still receive text invitations to book their jab, but when attending appointments, may be told they are no longer eligible.
There have also been reports of inconsistent messaging at different pharmacies, which may cause some confusion.
What about flu?
- You can get your free flu vaccine at your GP surgery, a local pharmacy (some offer walk-in appointments), through your midwife if you’re pregnant, or at school for eligible children.
- You’re eligible for a free flu jab if you receive Carer’s Allowance, are the main carer for an older, disabled or vulnerable person, or live with someone at high risk from flu.
